Alexandria Transportation Survey and trail connections

Bruce,

Thanks much for the information! I didn't realize that work
had been done to identify opportunities to make trail connections
on city property or to identify and improve existing dirt paths
that people have made in an effort to get where they want to go.
In other studies [1], these have been called "neighborhood trails"
or "demand paths."

I am not surprised that such proposals get a lot of NIMBY resistance,
since bike paths always seem to get this resistance (maybe people
don't like it when their property values go up?). In any case, it
seems to me that to make something like this work we need to ally
ourselves with groups that are sympathetic, such as children
(the Safe Routes to School program) and seniors (Alexandria Commission
on Aging?). I confess that I don't know much about how local groups
are dealing with health and transportation issues associated with
aging-in-place seniors, but do know that AARP supports Complete
Streets on a federal level for precisely this reason (which is why
I joined--and I wrote to tell them so).

Maybe we can discuss this at the Bike-Ped Program Meeting tonight.

Thanks Again!

Jonathan
