Explore the War
of 1812 on a Star-Spangled Bike Tour
Alexandria Archaeology Co-Hosting
June 5 Tour on Both Sides of Potomac

Discover how the War of 1812 impacted
Alexandria and Oxon Hill as you cycle on the Star-Spangled
Banner Trail! Celebrate
National Trails Day on Saturday, June 5, for a 10-mile bike tour through
history that crosses the Potomac River.

Participants will begin the tour
at 9 a.m. at one of two locations – Carlyle
House Historic Park(121
North Fairfax Street) in Old Town Alexandria or Oxon
Hill Farm(6411 Oxon
Hill Road) in Oxon Hill, Md. Cyclists will learn about the impact of the
War of 1812 from costumed interpreters and then cycle across the Woodrow
Wilson Bridge to the other historic site, as they learn how witnesses on
both sides of the river observed and experienced wartime events. An optional
two-hour 20-mile loop to Fort
Washingtondeparts from
Oxon Hill Farm at noon and includes an interpretive program at the fort.

Two hundred years ago, Alexandria
and Oxon Hill, though separated by the Potomac, were closely connected
through commercial and social interests. People from Oxon Hill conducted
business in Alexandria, and the two prominent families – the DeButts in
Oxon Hill and the Dulanys in Alexandria – were related through marriage,
with two weddings taking place in 1812.

The tours are free, but helmets,
reservations, and a signed waiver are required. Children under 16 years
of age must be accompanied by a participating adult. Routes include some
street cycling and hills. For more information or to make reservations,
