Dear fellow Bike/Walk Alexandria members:
The City of Alexandria is currently developing a comprehensive Wayfinding
Program to help both residents and visitors figure out how to get around
town. This includes vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. [

I am on the Wayfinding advisory committee as the Bike/Ped representative.
There are several issues of concern that were raised at the last Pedestrian
& Bicyclists Citizens' Group this month. NOW is the time for our voices to
be heard to ensure that these issues are considered in the plan. [minutes:

Wayfinding Public meeting:
Thursday, May 29
7 pm
GW Masonic Memorial
The agenda for the meeting is: Initial concept design, and the first round
of messaging and sign locations.
Basically, at this point, the consultants are finalizing what information
needs to be signed, how it will be organized, and what general format the
signs will take (kiosks, posts on streets, info boards on trails?)
The big issues that we need your ideas and input on are:
(1) Providing signage for services along the Mt. Vernon Trail, such as the
two bike shops and bike parking. Currently, both stores have been using
sandwich boards, but these can be a safety hazard and the City doesn't allow
them.
(2) Providing trail signage for the three Major trails - Mt. Vernon, Four
Mile Run and Holmes Run
(3) Identifying national trails that pass through Alexandria, including the
East Coast Greenway and US Bike Route 1, and for the Potomac Heritage Trail.
A big theme in the Wayfinding Program has been to reduce visual clutter by
consolidating information into one sign. (Note that temporary kiosks have
been placed at King St. Metro and at the Torpedo Factory if you want to
check them out.) I envision that trail maps located at key locations on the
trail (such as the endpoints or major intersections) could indicate services
and the national trails, but "local" signage is still necessary to divert
riders to the bike stores or for parking.
So, please if you have any ideas or want to know more, come to the meeting.
If you cannot attend, feel free to contact me via e-mail or call me at home
at 703-299-6036.
