CITY OF ALEXANDRIA
PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE MOBILITY PLAN DRAFT NOW AVAILABLE ON-LINE and
PUBLIC MEETING SET FOR THURSDAY, DEC. 6
The City of Alexandria is working to reduce dependence on private
automobiles and provide Alexandrians with transportation choices. One way
we can accomplish these goals is to improve access for persons with
disabilities, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
The city's Pedestrian and Bicycle Mobility Plan will provide a blueprint
for pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure improvements over the next 10
years. It builds on the policy recommendations in the 2007-08
Transportation Master Plan which will go to the Planning Commission and
City Council in early 2008.
The Pedestrian and Bicycle Mobility includes more than 5,000
recommendations for specific improvements to enhance connectivity for
pedestrians and bicyclists. The field data collection effort was one of
the most comprehensive efforts of its kind undertaken in the United States
and resulted in a list of improvements that includes more than 17.5 miles
of sidewalks, hundreds of new crosswalks, accessible curb ramps and
pedestrian countdown timers, 10.1 miles of new shared use-paths, 16.3
miles of new bicycle lanes and much more.
The City expects many of the recommendations in the Plan to be implemented
over time as part of regular maintenance or existing capital improvement
programs. Some will be made using more than $4.5 million in existing
grants set aside for pedestrian and bicycle improvements. Development
proposals and associated streetscape projects also offer opportunities for
improvements.
Implementation of the Plan will result in safer conditions for pedestrians
and bicyclists and make walking and bicycling more attractive
transportation choices in Alexandria.
A DRAFT plan is now on-line and available for public viewing here:
