[walkdc-discussions] Fw: Another person killed crossing Route 1 in crosswalk

Has anyone checked out that intersection?  I noticed a few years ago that 
Maryland state highway started putting pushbuttons in the medians along 
Georgia Avenue, and giving peds only time to cross half the street and then 
they have to push the button at the median and finish the crossing on the 
next cycle.  That is what seems to have happened with this poor guy -- he 
had reached the middle and was starting on the second half and was hit by 
someone in that first lane after the median. I assume the driver had a 
green signal or he wouldn't have moved.  Is that what happened there?  Do 
we know for sure that this man pushed the button and got the walk 
signal?  Or did he cross with the green light, assuming it would give time 
for peds to cross too?

Without an accessible pedestrian signals, people who are blind are at a 
huge disadvantage in situations where they are given time to cross only 
half the street -- they have no way of knowing that the traffic engineers 
didn't give them time to cross the whole street.  Sighted people also need 
to know that they are NOT being given time to cross the whole street.  Is 
there someone from that area who can check out that intersection and see 
what's going on with the traffic signal and ped signal?
