  1. BikeWalk Alexandria Issues – Jerry
  a. Jerry will draft a recruiting email.
  b. Dave or Bruce will see if they can get email listing from WABA for Alexandria members. Previous suggestions were giving WABA an email to send to the local WABA members if the membership list is not available.
  c. BWA Elections will be held at the end of the November meeting
                                                                             i. Current Nominations from Nominating Committee:
  1. Jerry King - President
  2. Dave Levy Vice President
  3. Elizabeth Wright Treasurer
  4. Secretary – Jerry W
  d. T shirt sales: No free shirts unless approved by BWA committee. Price now $10 each and when $100 sold the rest is profit for BWA.
It was suggested that we bring a few shirts to meetings to sell, officers can use as publicity at events plus continued distribution of Alexandria city bike maps and literature through BWA meeting members.
  1. Events – Past Current and Future:
  1. Sept 20-22 - BikeWalk Virginia Conference – Dave attended and provided a summary of events plus distributed some literature. There was interest from a newer female member/guest named Karen? in creating a Walking tours pamphlet like Arlington's as our walking counterparts are low in Bike Walk Alexandria.
  2. Sat., Oct 13 the Alexandria Heritage Trail Bike Ride. This year the ride will feature the city’s forgotten cemeteries. We can use more help! Contact Ruth Reeder.
  2. Status of bike/pedestrian projects. –Yon
  1. Mt Jefferson Greenway – Long discussion on leaving it as is or putting in a trail. Will discuss further next meeting. Discussed; Inserting it in a master plan to reserve for future use and connecting to an unlikely Potomac Yards commercially funded bridge over Route 1 to Potomac Yards shopping complex; getting community input for multi use; community garden, weather flooding {need to build it up higher as frequently a swamp} and lighting combined with issues of security/NIMBY if neighbors have people walking/ biking/ congregating through/ in their expanded back yards.
  2. Stop Sign Education Project:
                                                           i. The partners will hold educational events on September 29 and October 7 from 1 pm to 6 pm at the dead end of South Royal Street where it leads to the Mount Vernon Trail. 273 cyclists were “stopped” and educated last Saturday.
ii. Later in October, the Alexandria Police Department plans to increase enforcement of bicycle violations on October 13 and October 21 from 1 pm to 6 pm each day. Officers will be posted along local bikeways.
iii. In supporting a “bike friendly community” we all must follow the rules. We must obey the same rules as cars; running stop signs will cost you $87.
  3. E Glebe Traffic Calming Project; BWA supported the city’s plans for a crosswalk and traffic circle.
  4. Land bay G of Potomac Yard.
  5. Hearings on the city’s Transportation Master Plan will be held throughout the city {with similar information presented each time, though discussion may vary}. Yon suggested that BWA choose a few projects and focus on accomplishing those, though each person could have pet projects they could volunteer, and the group concentrate on accomplishing some higher visibility events, though not exclude other projects that individuals work on with others before and between meetings.
  3. Meetings concerning Monroe Bridge and Potomac Yard development.
  1. Meets every 2nd Thursday of month – next is 11 Oct, MV Recreation Center
  4. Woodrow Wilson Bridge Neighborhood Task Force –Jerry
  1. Plan on bike/Ped ride across North span of bridge before it opens. Looking for additional ideas?

Next Meeting: City of Alexandria’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Citizen’s Group will meet at 7:00 P.M. - Nov 5th 2007 at the Mount Vernon Community School (Library/Media Center).
After that meeting BikeWalk Alexandria will have their annual elections Quorum of 5 members needed.
