Police Cruiser Hits Pedestrian
September 24, 2007 - 4:12pm
WASHINGTON -- A man is hospitalized in serious condition after being hit by
a police cruiser Monday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses say the pedestrian was walking at the crosswalk on Wisconsin
Avenue -- just north of Newark Street in Northwest -- when a police cruiser
traveling southbound hit the man.
D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter says the 70-year-old man has several
serious injuries, including broken ribs and a possible skull fracture.
At the time of the accident, a car in one lane stopped to allow the man to
cross, but the officer kept going, eyewitnesses say. The cruiser stopped
about ten yards past the crosswalk.
Police confirm that the cruiser hit the pedestrian, but they are trying to
figure out why.
Crash investigators are measuring distances and conducting forensic testing
before they can determine who was at fault.
