ALEXANDRIA CELEBRATES EARTH DAY!
Come help celebrate Earth Day, here in Alexandria on April 21, 2007 from 9 AM 12 PM at Ben Brenman Park . This years theme is Eco City : Urban Going Green. All events and exhibits are designed to help residents make their home and community more green and environmentally-friendly. Events include:
A park clean-up along Holmes Run and Backlick Run. Help beautify our parks and waterways.
Blue Sky Puppet show which teach kids and adults about the importance of energy conservation around the home.
FREE personal document shredding for all Alexandrian residents. (Please no more than three boxes or 150 pounds)
FREE composting lessons by Master Gardeners and compost bin sale.
Arbor Day tree planting and tree sale. The City celebrates Arbor Day with an annual tree planting as part of the Earth Day activities. In addition to the tree planting, the City will hold its Second Annual Tree Sale from 8 AM to 2 PM on April 21st at Ben Brenman Park .
A guest speaker, J. Blaine Bonham Jr., executive vice president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) and founder of its urban greening program, Philadelphia Green.
Live music by The Interference, a local band with roots at TC Williams High School, is scheduled to perform from 11 AM to 12 PM
Educational exhibits and youth activities provided by environmental organizations, local businesses, and City of Alexandria Departments, and much more!
New Event! Attend a free screening of An Inconvenient Truth, the award-winning documentary narrated by Former Vice President Gore; Friday, April 20 from 7- 9 PM at Mount Vernon Community School (2601 Commonwealth Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22305).
After the movie, Dr. Susan Crate, Professor of Environmental Policy and Social Sciences at George Mason University , will present a lecture focusing on solutions. Dr. Crate is a certified presenter of The Climate Project, a training workshop developed by Gore. The event is co-sponsored by the Sierra Club.
