BikeWalk Alexandria Minutes
Monday 8 Jan 2007
7:30 at St. Elmo's Coffee Pub.

ATTENDING: Jerry King, Bruce Dwyer, Dave Levy, Ruth Reeder, Pat Devine, Yon Lambert, Ken Lyons, Chris Kern, Elizabeth Wright, Caroline Pott.

1.	BikeWalk Alexandria Issues- Jerry
a.	Membership: We need to look for new ways to recruit
		b.	A suggestion was made to make a presentation at the meeting of Joint Homeowners Associations.
2.	Events for BikeWalk Alexandria:
a.	Washington Day Parade - We will check to see if we can participate.
		b.	Earth Day - Elizabeth will look into getting a booth again.
		c.	Waterfront Festival - Yon will check to see if he can get portable bike racks so we can promote biking to the Festival. Elizabeth will check to see if we can get a booth there also.
3.	City Projects and Input - Yon
a.	Meeting Location: Yon suggested we consider other locations. This was discussed and decided to try it out. Feb will be at St Elmo's and starting in March we will try to meet in the Mount Vernon Rec Center. Yon will check it out. We also will consider meeting in other areas once we get started in the new location although we tried that about 2 years ago with little success.
		b.	Meeting Agenda: Also Yon suggested and we agreed to have every other meeting a "public" meeting where it is not a BikeWalk Alexandria meeting although we would still attend and cover most of the items we normally cover. Since this would be city sponsored Yon would run the meeting. This format would encourage more public input and possibly more folks to assist in our goals.
		c.	The city hired Toole Design Group of College Park, Md. to do studies on bike and ped access and review the bike trail network. This Mobility Needs Assessment has begun and will be complete this spring. As part of this study Yon will be meeting with and briefing four City recognized committees to cover bike and ped activities.
i.	Ad Hoc Transportation Task Force
ii.	Commission on Persons with Disabilities
				iii.	Park and Recreation Commission
				iv.	Traffic and Parking Board
There is more information on this study here: http://www.alexride.org/bikeped_study.php

		d.	Sidewalk repairs have been made to Tennessee Ave (a joint T&ES maintenance, transit access and Safe Routes to School project) and the west side of Van Dorn.
		e.	Yon is working with Arlington to expand their Arlington Community Ride into Alexandria. About on third of the ride is planned to be in Alexandria. June 2 is the current planned date. This is also National Trails Day. Everyone agreed this is a great opportunity and it also will take a lot of planning to do it right.
		f.	New bike trail signs have been put up on Glebe and Valley Drive to help guide trail users from Four Mile Run through Alexandria to the Shirlington pedestrian bridge. Yon Lambert and Bruce Dwyer completed a new signage plan for the Mount Vernon Trail which will include new bicycle signs on Union and Royal Streets.
		g.	Bike to Work Day is scheduled for Friday May 18th.
		h.	Yon is working on providing bike racks to businesses on a share basis where the city pays half.
		i.	There is going to be a "Map Quest for Bikes" that will cover Arlington, Alexandria and DC.
		j.	Yon needs some good photos that include bikes. Jerry will ask the listserve.

Next Meeting at St Elmo's Monday Feb the 5th.

Thanks,
Pat Devine
