Hello all,
For the past 3 years George Mason Elementary has hosted an after
school walking club targeting students. Each year less and less
parents and teachers participate. The school nurse, Robin Wallen, who
coordinates the club mentioned to me that she may need to cancel this
year's club due to safety concerns. It is simply not feasible for one
person to monitor and interact with 40+ kids.

So I am writing to all the ped. activists on this list. If any of you
might consider volunteering for one (or more) days it would be great
fun for you and a wonderful way to personally ensure that kids have a
safe place for walking. You could walk with the kids or simply stand
on the sidelines and observe. I tend to go and be a 'cheerleader' of
sorts!

If you are interested please contact Robin directly at
rwallin at acps.k12.va.us or at 703-706-4470. She will send you an ACPS
volunteer registration form which is required for all who wish to
interact with the kids.

Here's the specifics:
*******Feelin' Good Mileage Club
**where: George Mason Elementary School, 2601 Cameron Mills Rd.
**when: Tuesdays, 2:45-3:45, beginning April 12-May 24
**purpose: to provide students with an afterschool enrichment
opportunity focused on walking thereby encouraging students to be
adopt a more physically active lifestyle.
**what happens: wearing pedometers, students walk a route designed by
the coordinator for a one hour period. During this unstructured PA
time, students often find new friendships, destress from the day and
generally have fun. At the end, students record their steps and
receive a token award for each mile walked.

I will be there 2-3 times, my coworker Denise another 2-3 times, but
the more the better. With enough supervision we can even get them out
into the neighborhoods and teach good pedestrian skills! Hope to see
some of you!
