Mt. Vernon Trail Alignment

In response to Bob Brubaker question about the Mt. V. trail last week, the city says they are still working on it with VDOT. Good news, but I don't feel easy about this yet because of the VDOT factor. Please keep the issue on the front burner in your circles.

No, this is still in the works. We are continuing to work on securing this
easement and submitted a request for the area needed. VDOT rep. Nick
Nicholson, has indicated that he supports the idea and is waiting for a
formal assessment and valuation of the easement. At any rate I'll ask
staff to contact Nick to see where this stands in the process.

See below excerpts from the Wilson Bridge update web page, which indicates
that they do not intend to make the temporary trail around Hunting Point
permanent. This is the number 2 priority in the city open space report for
2004. Is this a lost cause with the city staff? And if so, do we need to
rally the troops. Any information on the status of this number 2 priority,
which is a very important piece in the "Green Crescent", would be
appreciated by me and the open space, biking and walking community.

Thanks
Bruce

"The newly relocated Mt. Vernon Trail that will join the S. Washington
Street at the Washington Street deck and carry pedestrians and bicyclists
to Jones Point Park will be opened this spring and the temporary trail
around the Hunting Point Tower apartments will be removed.
The deck will be a hub for pedestrian and bike users to access the Mt.
Vernon Trail north and south, to cross the new Wilson Bridge when the Inner
Loop is completed in 2008 and to access US Route 1 along a ramp parallel to
the Beltway ramp that will carry northbound US Route1 to the Beltway. The
pedestrian/bikeway will go up to meet the Washington Street deck as the
ramp to the Beltway goes down in grade to join the Beltway."
