FAIRFAX COUNTY TRANSPORTATION PLAN UPDATE MEETINGS March 1-14

Public Meetings on Transportation Plan

In March, Fairfax County will be holding a series of public meetings
on updating the county's transportation plan. This is an important
opportunity to educate officials and citizens about the need for more
coordination of transportation with land use planning.

Fairfax County's current Transportation Plan states: "One of the
options available to the County for effectuating long-term
improvements to the transportation system is to exercise its ability
to influence the pattern of land use in the County; specifically, to
establish more efficient land use patterns with respect to
transportation." But is the county doing this?

The Sierra Club has advocated with the county for placing development
near existing infrastructure, especially transportation and transit
corridors. The alternative is development that creates yet more
pollution and traffic, devours open space, and doesn't benefit our
communities. Such a more clustered pattern of development is served
better by transit, and we should ask that a core network of transit be
planned before adding more highway lanes. We need to continue
emphasizing this these messages at every possible opportunity.

Please attend one of the meetings, and let VDOT Fairfax County know
that instead of a business-as-usual approach of widening roads and
building new ones, you want a more efficient system that takes
advantage of the infrastructure we already have.

Meetings are scheduled for the following times and locations:
