bicycle and pedestrian accommodations approved to date are still in the =
plan and not experiencing any difficulties, yet. =20
What can we do? The proposed trail in still in the plan and I think =
that the project staff will advise or consult with the various =
stakeholders before making any changes. At this point, it does not =
appear that a firm determination has been made that it can not be =
engineered to be done.
So please send (and ask your friends and neighbors too) an e-mail, call, =
or write the Wilson Bridge Project Office to support keeping the west =
side Telegraph to Eisenhower multi-use path in the plan.

I attended the Wilson Bridge information update =
meeting last=20
night, May 22 and was informed by the project staff that one of the =
proposed=20
bike/ped accommodations is in serious jeopardy. It is =
the off-road=20
path proposed to run south from the existing Eisenhower path along the =
bank of=20
Cameron Run, under the beltway to connect to the west side of Telegraph =
Road=20
south of the beltway. A new parking garage has been built at =
the west=20
end of the series of buildings on the south side of Eisenhower in =
Alexandria=20
between Telegraph Road and Cameron Run. While it appears that =
there is=20
sufficient room for a path, unfortunately, the storm water run off =
control is=20
located in that space. According to the bridge project staff this=20
restricted access will make it very difficult and more costly to =
construct the=20
path. I also felt that perhaps some of the project staff may not =
have much=20
enthusiasm for the location of this path. A bike/ped path is =
planned to=20
cross the beltway on the vehicle ramp on the east side of Telegraph, =
however, it=20
is not practical for a westbound bicyclist or pedestrian to take this =
route, and=20
it would involve crossing several streets making it considerably more =
dangerous=20
as the only alternative route through this =
interchange.

The proposed path has been identified in =
the Alexandria=20
City Council approved bike plan for 4 years and in the Telegraph Road =
design for=20
three years. It is unfortunate that the site plan and permitting =
process=20
did not appear to take these plans into consideration. There may =
well have=20
been other factors involved in the process, but the bottom line at this =
point=20
appears that bicyclists and pedestrians continue as a low priority since =
we may=20
lose a very important trail connection. The proposed trail was not =
arrived=20
at lightly. It was a portion of a trail approved by the City =
of=20
Alexandria in a bike plan that took several years to develop. It was a=20
recommendation of the Wilson Bridge Project Telegraph=20
Road stakeholders panel, made up of diverse interest from the =
neighborhoods=20
of Alexandria and Fairfax County. The recommendation was approved =
by the=20
Project technical committee and is currently still in the design=20
specifications.

From what I could tell from drawing and talking to =
