Commonwealth Av in Alex, which has a wide bike lane. These wide parking
lanes on Sherwood seem to be having the same effect on traffic. There's
now a much wider gap between the cars in transit and those that are parked.
If definately feels safer on the bike. I don't know if VDOT has average
speed stat's from before the road was re-stripped but car traffic does seem
more restrained.
Some emails had already suggested wide parking lanes as a backup if the bike
lanes weren't accepted. Besides being an easier VDOT sell, it looks like
an easier sell with Neighborhood Associations. They seem more willing to
get behind the 'traffic calming' argument of wide parking lanes then of the
same affect when done with bike lanes.
When first trying to get the ball rolling it was also helpful that Sherwood
Hall was already on the Fairfax Non Motorized Map as bike route.
Thanks for all the help
