Vernon Trail to the creation or expansion of trails in Alexandria and
Arlington, cyclists, joggers, walkers and skaters will have more space to
call their own.
Among the changes, the most expensive and prominent are two new bridges on
the Mount Vernon Trail at Reagan National Airport, courtesy of the
Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. The high-flying bridges, which
opened earlier this month, not only separate pedestrians and bikers from
traffic, said authority spokeswoman Tara Hamilton, but also offer decent
views of the big birds taking off and landing.
The two bridges cost roughly $1.1 million, Hamilton said, and were under
construction for nearly a year.
"And of course we worked with the [National] Park Service to make sure we
conformed with all their concerns about materials and aesthetics," she said.
The sides of the bicycle bridges, like most other parkway bridges, are faced
with stone.
