VDOT Website Features Bike Month Events

The annual presentation of the Virginia Governor’s Bike Month
Proclamation, held Saturday, May 1, 2004 at the Bell Tower at Capitol
Square in Richmond, is currently featured on the homepage of the Virginia
Department of Transportation <http://www.virginiadot.org>.

Lieutenant Governor Tim Kaine, a long-time member of the Richmond Area
Bicycling Association, presented the proclamation on behalf of Governor
Mark Warner. Cyclists from across Virginia held up placards with the
names of their localities for the official photo
<http://www.virginiadot.org/infoservice/bk-calendar-may.asp>.

Allen Turnbull, Executive Director of BikeWalk Virginia, organized and
promoted the event and introduced the lieutenant governor. Susan Simmers,
VDOT's Bicycle Program Manager, distributed copies of the proclamations
<http://www.virginiadot.org/infoservice/bk-cert.htm> to the participants.

Barbara Duerk, on behalf of the Virginia Bicycling Federation board of
directors, presented Lt. Gov. Kaine with a VBF "Share the Road" cycling
vest. Mary Turnbull, representing the Williamsburg Area Bicyclists,
presented Tim Kaine with a "Bike Month" T-shirt. Three cyclists from
Florida, who participated in the ceremony, joined the group for a ride
around the Capitol and Belle Island.

Virginia bicyclists are encouraged to download copies of the Governor's
"Certificate of Recognition"
<http://www.virginiadot.org/infoservice/bk-cert.htm> for presentation to
their local elected officials. Maybe the Governor's office will permit
more enthusiastic language in future proclamations!
