ARLINGTON, Va. - Arlington County Manager Ron Carlee today submitted a
$667.6 million proposed Fiscal Year 2005-2010 Capital Improvement Program
(CIP) to the County Board.

The water treatment plant renovations are projected to cost approximately
$250 million; Phase I of North Tract development, $50 million; Metro
funding, $52.5 million, and WALKArlington projects, $84.5 million [over 6 years]

- WALKArlington - An integrated approach to transportation
Arlington's urban transportation programs make improvements that enhance
the movement of people throughout the community. These initiatives are
integrated to provide a culture that focuses on walking, cycling and
transit activities, which makes alternative transportation options
convenient, safe, and more attractive than individual auto trips.

Approximately $10.2 million is recommended in the FY 2005 bond to support
these activities, such as implementing the WALKArlington initiative,
development of the Arterial Transportation Management program, continuance
of the Neighborhood Traffic Calming program, and further enhancements to
Arlington's trails, bikeways, and transit system.

In addition to these County programs, the Neighborhood Conservation
Program allocates a significant portion of its funding to street and
sidewalk projects within neighborhoods. These projects further advance
Arlington's vision as an urban community. In recognition of the success
and importance of this program, $10 million is recommended for funding in
the FY 2005 bond.

Arlington's six-year CIP identifies the capital needs of the community and
indicates how these needs will be funded over the six-year period. It is
updated every two years and is subject to changes annually. The proposed
2005-2010 CIP is available on the County's website at
www.co.arlington.va.us.
