Support a Bike-Friendly Alexandria!
Alexandria Bicyclists need to act now to influence the Alexandria City Council during FY 2005 budget deliberations. In the past, the city has been slow to make bicycle and pedestrian friendly improvements. Council now has new members more sympathetic to bikes, pedestrians and trails. They need to hear from you that there is support in the community for these improvements. Specifically, tell the council that the budget needs:
a.. a full time position to plan and coordinate bicycle, pedestrian, and trail projects , and
b.. a doubling of the annual funding for trails and bicycle projects from $77,000 to $150,000
The City Council adopted a Bicycle Transportation and Multi-use Trail Plan in 1998. The plan identified a bike route network for the city as well as projects for trails and improved safety. The plan also called for a bicycle coordinator/planner. It is now six years later and very little has been done to implement the plan that will go a long way to improve our health, clean our air and reduce our congestion. As the tenth most densely populated city in the country at 8,452 people per square mile, Alexandria needs to be aggressive in promoting bicycling and walking as solutions to these problems.
Have an influence on the budget; contact City Council now but no later than Friday, April 23:
Mayor William Euille (alexvamayor at aol.com)
Vice Mayor Redella Pepper (delpepper at aol.com)
Councilman Ludwig P. Gaines (councilmangaines at aol.com)
Councilman Rob Krupicka (rob at krupicka.com)
Councilman Andrew Macdonald (macdonaldcouncil at msn.com)
Councilman Paul Smedberg (paulcsmedberg at aol.com)
Councilwoman Joyce Woodson (council at joycewoodson.net)
Thanks for your support!
