Agenda Detail for 2/18/04 meeting
Alexandria Bike Map Update
The Bike Committee reviewed routes in May 2003 for an update of the Washington Metro Bike Map put out by ADC. ADC will soon be asking for a review of the draft. They are not going to make a distinction between official and unofficial as on previous editions of the map, which was a point of confusion and contention in our last review. The city is currently interested updating its map. The bike committee will review its work from last May to satisfy both these needs. We had previously agreed to not show planned routes on the map so as not to confuse the biking and walking public. Planned routes were updated in November 2001 from the 1998 plan for the open space plan, and another update should be scheduled and put on a separate map for planning purposes only. Out of city routes on the Alexandria map need to be updated based on the final ADC Map.
We will mark up maps of our May work, but there is not text description. Here are some of the suggestions/questions I would like to address along with whatever others bring to the meeting.
1. Shift the Payne Street route to Fayette to connect north to Monroe St. Bridge. Jog over to West before duke to take advantage of traffic light. It’s a little tricky.
2. What to do with King St. west of Quaker. NOVA study recommends this as a bike route, but implying that improvements are needed.
3. In Del Ray, is the Howell or the Custis crossing of Rt. 1 better for a bike route?
4. Add Tennessee as a route.
5. Shift route from Skyhill to Taylor Run.
6. Eliminate route through Seminary Forest it is a private road and since Howard St. is close and more direct in most cases.
7. We added Franklin as a route between Royal and Union. Isn’t Wilkes better with no hill?
8. Does Van Dorn as an off road route between Eisenhower and Pickett work?
9. Do we need Edsall between Van Dorn and Pickett?
10. New Duke St. Tunnel is planned for pedestrians only. Probably a lost cause.
