Kirk Kincannon Selected as Director of
Alexandria Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities Department
Alexandria City Manager Phil Sunderland announced today (Feb. 9) the appointment, effective March 5, of Kirk W. Kincannon as Director of the Alexandria Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities Department. Kincannon will replace current Director Sandra Whitmore, who will retire on March 5.
Kincannon, a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional, has been deputy director of the City's Recreation Department for four years and has 23 years of experience in the administration and management of recreation programs and facilities. Prior to his current position in Alexandria, Kincannon was director of Wythe County, VA, Parks and Recreation Department for five years, and was a park specialist and assistant manager for the Fairfax County Park Authority for nine years.
As deputy director of the Alexandria Recreation Department, Kincannon has been responsible for park operations, natural resource management, capital projects, the City marina, the Buddy Ford Nature Center, tree care, facility maintenance and the capital budget. The Recreation Department includes more than 300 full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees. The department operates a wide variety of programs for people of all ages and is responsible for 944 acres of parkland, nine recreation centers, and the City marina.
Sunderland said 'I am very pleased to appoint Kirk as director of Recreation and Parks. His extensive experience and background, and his familiarity with the department, the City government and the Alexandria community, make him the right person for the job. With the leadership and dedication he will provide, the Recreation Department will continue to provide programs and services of the highest quality for Alexandrians.'
Kincannon is a native of Northern Virginia. He earned his bachelor's degree in recreation services from Virginia Wesleyan College.
