Subject: Successful Pedestrian Connection
Here is a story of a successful pedestrian connection in Alexandria.
This connection is one we had identified for the Open Space Plan. Thanks
for the story Larry. Do you or does anybody else know how this came
about and how it was funded?

"One Small Step for Warwick Village
By Larry Grossman
While President Bush may be dreaming of future moonwalks for mankind,
Warwick Village residents are taking their small steps for mankind here
on earth along the new Landover Pathway. What was once a bumpy, rutted
and narrow asphalt walkway slapped down between the end of Landover
Street and West Glebe Road is now a six-foot wide concrete walkway that
glides its way down between the Chirilagua Market and the Foodway Store
and connects to West Glebe Road. Black bollards stand like sentinels
protecting the walkway for pedestrians and cutting off vehicular and
truck access between the two parking lots. This area was dangerous for
pedestrians as vehicles sped over the old pathway and through the
parking lots to avoid the traffic light at West Glebe and Mt. Vernon
Avenue. The pathway also has pedestrian scaled lights and will have
extensive landscaping planted this spring, which will make this project
look less than a moonwalk and more like an earthwalk."
