Subject: Transportation Commission

In your consideration of a Transportation Commission for the City, the Bike Committee recommends that bicycling, walking, and public transit be represented on the Commission. As the country's 10th most densely populated city with congestion and air quality problems, we believe the city should be doing much more to encourage alternatives to the single occupancy vehicle. We cite Arlington as an example of actions Alexandria could take.
a.. Arlington has long had a Transportation Commission. Arlington also has separate Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Transit Advisory Committees that advise the transportation planning staff in the Department of Public Works. Typically, each advisory committee is informally represented by at least one member who serves on the Transportation Commission.
b.. Arlington has had a bicycle/pedestrian planner for over 15 years and recently hired a pedestrian professional to augment this capability.
c.. Arlington aggressively encourages bicycling and pedestrian transportation with substantial investments, for example, by spending more in one year on trails than Alexandria has spent in 10 years, by investing in excess of $ 500,000 annually in Safe Routes to School, by adding over 25 miles of well marked bike lanes compared to Alexandria's 1.5 miles of faded bike lane, and more.
We hope that you will elevate the consideration of bicycling, walking, and public transit in solving Alexandria transportation challenges.
Thank you.
