[walkdc-discussions] Opinions on ped pylons in the District?

I'm a high mileage DC walker. Are these new pedestrian pylons those
flexible poles, about 2' tall ? The only one's I've seen are in the
Downtown DC area. If so, they're better then nothing and enhance a painted
ped island.
It's a no brainer that one feels safer in median area when it's elevated or
where there are physically strong (ex. concrete filled 3" pipes) pylons
buried in the ground. Since these new pylons flex, I can't tell if the
goal is to protect cars from damage or protect Peds. They do seem to keep
cars from making tight turns that get close to Ped's standing in the painted
island.
Moral: If they're there to enhance the painted island, then great
If they're there rather then a pole, I want the pole.

Subject: [walkdc-discussions] Opinions on ped pylons in the District?
If anyone does a lot of walking in the District and has strong feelings
about the new pedestrian pylons showing up around town, please let me
know. There's a reporter at the Washington Post who is looking for
people who think they help, or think they are useless.
