Alexandria Bicycle Study Committee
minutes for 17 April 2001 Meeting

Attendees:
 Dave Levy
 Ruth Reeder
 Kirk Kincannon

Meeting started at 19:35.
March minutes approved except that Chan will not do Pedals for Progress event.

Eisenhower TEA21 Grant Status:
 Bruce attended LAB National Bike Summit (& lobbying event)
 - spoke to 9 transportation aides

Jamieson status:
 Letter went to Carlyle with May 1st deadline.
 Sue will do inspection of bridge Fri 4/20.
 Some progress has been made.
 Might be photo-op for opening of path.

Tarleton bike project:
 Looking into ownership and easements around Tarleton park.
 5 April Tarleton meeting w/ Chan & Staff
 Chan recognized for his lobbying efferts even though they
 were unsuccessful. It is good to get word out into the
 community about projects.

Raleigh bike project:
 neighbors who do not use Holmes Run trail were not supportive of trail.
 Trail was marked before meeting.
 Connie is championing idea, but area is viewed as unsafe.
 Since this is not a major linkage, this project is tabled until
 local residents want something done.

Chambliss link is now priority
 Lincolnia assoc. OK, other side uncertain
 - contact Scott Littlefield
 - ask council and other officials - Dave
 - other local leaders

Map has some errors.
Fairfax County is updating maps, looking at Accotink Greenway
to WOD trail connections.

Abingdon/Slaters Lane
 NPS planning repair of wooden decking bridge by mariana towers
 Bruce was called about a detour
 work is to be done weekdays 10am-2pm to minimize Mt Vernon
 trail impact
 Maybe TES would make a curb cut and provide signage near
 power plant (action - Sue)

 removing lower limbs of trees, root problems, close fence
 limit width of right of way
 trees are screening for power plant
 elevation drop off requires fence for safety

 curb cut and signage priority
 20 day duration of detour
 maybe wait until Spetember

 Congressman Oberstar interest
 Jim Moran's district, yet there are Federal property issues
 Still talking about Slaters lane / GW Parkway intersection
 TES study ongoing for Slaters West of GW Pkwy.
 HOV lanes keep bikes off roadway
 Local government needs plans for Feds to act on.

Commonwealth bike lanes:
 Bike symbols without direction
 email Paul about wrong way bicyclists
 Bike signage meeting this Thursday
 - considering back-to-back signage

Bikes for Disadvantages Kids:
 - contact MORE, events May 12-13 and Earth Day
 volunteers to fix and give bikes away
 maybe coordinate with B-Safe
 Volunteers are requested
 Police have 30 bikes in this program

George Mason classroom bike safety:
 request for volunteers (schedule in agenda)
 Rodeo May 5

Open space public forums:
 April 16, 23, May 2 - more details on agenda

Governor's proclaimation of May as Bike Month - ride May 1-2
 WABA message went out today

June 2nd Earth Day ride
 Meet at St. Elmos - call for volunteers
 Also Alexandria Optimists Rodeo, Bike fitting, giveaway
 and 4 mile run planned for 6/2 Earth Day

 Potomac Yards - letter from Dave Levy about lack of
 sidewalk on "desire line" between 560 apartments and
 a Starbucks.
 project and 1998 bicycle plan says to integrate
 new and old communities

 Eisenhower crosswalk on paint list.

Other business:
 03 budget - Kirk
 repaving trail needs for operational budget
 - notes and locations, set priorities

 snow removal was 02 issue

 -paving behind condos canal place, complete before detour happens

 Ruth - Heritage Trail promotion and signage
