Dear Bicycle and Pedestrian Advocates
There’s now another DC crosswalk away from an intersection. It’s in NW DC,
at 26th and K Street. 26th does not intersect K Street, but it has a well
designed Bike/Ped crossing with a traffic island. Even during rush hour, it
’s easy to cross. They have a Pedestrian traffic light, but it’s almost
unnecessary. Because of the medium strip, a person need only look one-way
at a time. The traffic lights at the adjacent intersections produce
necessary gaps in the traffic.
I really hope this catches on. I city walk more then 20 miles a week.
When a crosswalk is at an intersection, I only feel safe if there are many
other pedestrians waiting to cross. Too often, right-turning drivers
cut-off a single pedestrian even with a walk indicator device flashing.
Worse, it often happens behind the pedestrian’s field of view.
I don’t think any amount of police enforcement will stop this driving
behavior. From my experience, crossings that allow the Bicyclists and
Pedestrians better control of their own safety are what we should advocate.
Thanks for your consideration,
Bob Brubaker
