NORTHEN VIRGINIA REGIONAL
BIKEWAY & TRAIL NETWORK STUDY

A plan to improve bicycling and walking in Northern Virginia
Bike Network News
June 2001

NORTHERN VIRGINIA BIKEWAY AND
TRAIL PLAN UNDERWAY

Would you like to help make Northern Virginia a better
place to ride a bike and walk? You can... by
participating in the Northern Virginia Regional
Bikeway and Trail Network Study. The Study
includes the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon and
Prince William, and all incorporated towns in these
counties, as well as the cities of Alexandria, Falls
Church, Fairfax, Manassas and Manassas Park.
The study will identify existing and
funded bikeways and trails in the region, analyze
critical gaps between the facilities and in quality of
facilities, and finally recommend a prioritized program
to complete the regional bikeway and trail network.

If the study is to be successful and identify the needs
and priorities of non-motorized transportation users in
Northern Virginia, citizen participation is critical.
Opportunities to provide input and learn about the
study's findings and recommendations will be available
throughout the project. Two public meetings will be
held and an interactive website will be developed
allowing users to view and provide input on to the
study's findings. Three electronic newsletters will also
be distributed during the study. Additionally, a Bikeway
and Trail Network Study Workgroup, with
representatives from all local jurisdictions, will advise
VDOT and the consultant team throughout the project.
