Alexandria Receives Funds From State

The Commonwealth Transportation Board has awarded $372,000 in transportation
enhancement funds to the city of Alexandria's Department of Recreation,
Parks and Cultural Activities to improve and expand the multi-use trail on
Eisenhower Avenue.
The two-mile trail will be upgraded with signs and guardrail, and a section
will be rerouted so pedestrians and bicyclists can avoid a busy crossing. An
underpass will be built at the Cameron Run Bridge to connect to the Holmes
Run Trail and Hensley Park.
The Transportation Enhancement Program was created in 1991 by Congress to
ensure that a small share of federal transportation funds is invested in
projects that support communities, the natural environment and historic
preservation.
The Virginia Department of Transportation administers the program through an
application and review process, and the Commonwealth Transportation Board
selects the winning projects and divides the available funds throughout each
of VDOT's nine districts.
As much as 80 percent of an enhancement project can be financed with federal
money; at least 20 percent must come from other public or private sources.
