Subject: 14th Street and Columbia Is Bridge Trail
Dear Bike/Peds
Attended the 14th Street and Columbia Island Bridge Improvement Meeting
yesterday.
http://www.efl.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/gwmp_web1.htm
Lot less trail improvement then I had hoped for. Some of the trail redesign
was buried in a book of drawings. Few were bike friendly. Also no
plans for any near term safety improvements. Actually this appears to be
a road-trail project consolidation that will actually delay some planned
trail upgrades.
On 'hump bridge' urged them to consider barrier between trail (elevated
sidewalk) and road. They argued that historic nature of bridge preclude
this. Pointed out 'historic' jersey barrier between traffic lanes.
Also not clear what happened to the Moran money for more immediate trail
improvements.
Good news was they seemed to really want trail design feedback. One real
trail improvement is their plan shows a trail that loops underneath the hump
bridge to get to 'Lady Bird Park'. That will sure beat surface crossing
the GW Parkway. They're also talking about replacing the GW Pkwy entrance
with one from Boundary Channel Dr. If they ever put it in, it'll beat
crossing the rotting wood bridge.
While the Public Involvement Mtgs are over you can still send feedback till
21 July.
