This message wouldn't go through on our work email server, so AOL gets to
send it out:
Thanks for all of your responses to my question regarding whether to use
directional arrows on Commonwealth's new and improved bike lanes. It looks
like we will be painting the Commonwealth bike lanes without the optional
directional arrow (but with the bike symbol). The reasons for this, from your
ideas, are as follows:
1) The arrows are redundant in two ways. Bicyclists are required to ride with
traffic, not against it. Also, a cyclist riding the wrong way will notice what
would appear to them as upside down bike symbols on the asphalt, which should
give them a clue.
2) The directional arrows will cost additional funds to maintain.
I spoke with Doug McCobb, our Dep. Director of Transportation, and he said the
lanes should go in within the next two weeks.
If you reply, do so to my work address, paul.demaio at ci.alexandria.va.us.
Thanks,
Paul DeMaio
