Now is your opportunity to speak up for bicycles and other non-motorized
transportation in Alexandria's planning process for open space and
transportation.

OPEN SPACE

The city will be holding a series of public forums over the next several
months to gather public ideas and thoughts about Open Space. Multi-use
trails, paths, and greenways are primary uses of open space. Improvements
in our trail network can greatly
improve the livability of Alexandria by encouraging people to bicycle or
walk to work, or to school, or to the store, or just to a friend's house for
a visit. Attend one or more of the
city sponsored open space meetings. Bring your friends and neighbors.

There will be a scoping meeting in each of the city's three
planning districts beginning at 7 PM:

Monday April 16, Lee Rec. Center District I
Monday April 23, Mt. Vernon Rec. Center District II
Wednesday May 2, Patrick Henry Rec. Center District III

There will also be a citywide Open Space Summit
Saturday June 23 9 AM to 1 PM at the Lee Rec. Center

TRANSPORTATION

The city is about to launch the development of a comprehensive
transportation policy and program with three central policy goals all aimed
at protecting and improving the quality of life in the city:
1. Keep through traffic on the arterials and primary collectors and off
local residential streets
2. Define the primary function of major roadways
3. Reduce the number of vehicles on city roadways by means of public
transportation, cat pooling and other forms of non-vehicle transportation,
including bicycles.

You can speak on the importance of bicycling, walking, and other non-SOV
transportation at the City Council Public Hearing on Saturday, April 21 at
City Hall. Confirm approximate time by checking the docket number next week
