FEBRUARY 20, 2001 MINUTES

Introduction of Tricia McManus, Landscape Architect, Parks & Recreation.

Minutes approved from January meeting.

TEA-21 Grant was submitted by Parks & Rec in January.  Grant requests will be reviewed during March/April and awarded in July.  Bruce and Kirk to coordinate a site tour during March with political appointee(s).
		Phase 1A - Eisenhower Underpass & New Asphalt Trail (5,600 LF) - $362,000
		Phase 1B - Replace Existing Asphalt Trail (5,500 LF) - $370,000
		Design - $102,000

Earth Day Bike Rodeo: The Optimist Club is volunteering to help organize the bike rodeo for the City’s Earth Day on June 2.  Howard Kaye is the representative from the Optimist Club.  Activities discussed include: helmet give away (Fire Dept); bike maintenance (Spokes); safety literature; course layout; bike registration (Connie West/Police); bike raffle/gift certificate.  Howard is looking for five volunteers to assist on June 2.

Jaimeson Ave: Suzanne is meeting on February 21 with the Hooff’s Run bridge contractor to discuss phasing of the remaining bridge construction to allow completion of the bike trail.  Remaining work includes railings on the bridge and a retaining wall on the southwest embankment.  Any safety issues regarding the railing and embankment need to be addressed before the City will open the bridge to pedestrians.

Tarleton:	Bruce will attend a community meeting on February 21.  Support for this trail is anticipated from the residents.   Suzanne will prepare a scope of work for an  engineering design consultant.
Raleigh:	Chan will attend a community meeting on March 1.  Support for this trail is anticipated from the residents.   Suzanne and Tricia to meet Bruce on February 22 to walk the proposed alignment.  Suzanne will prepare a scope of work for an  engineering design consultant.
Chambliss:  Committee is deferring this trail due to resistance of residents.
Abingdon: Deferred for discussion at next meeting.


Bike Route Signage: Chan is working on preparing a Draft Master Plan (due October) for a grant receive for historical signage on the Heritage Trail.  Suzanne will schedule a meeting with Doug McCobb and Chan to coordinate bike signage on this trail.

Available funding is sufficient to construct the Tarleton and Raleigh improvements in 02.

Pedestrian Bridge Over Duke Street:  TES is requesting CMAQ funding for widening the existing Cameron Station flyover on Duke Street to facilitate pedestrian and bike crossings from the dog walk area/Cameron Station and from the library/Ben Brenamen Park.  Members questioned if funding for this project could be used elsewhere along the Duke Street corridor.  Suzanne to discuss other pedestrian/bike improvements in vicinity of Landmark Mall and Holmes Run under Shirley Highway with TES Director.

Snow Removal: Kirk requested Bike Committee to prioritize paths for Parks and Rec to clear during snow.  Kirk cautioned that Parks and Rec is currently limited with only two snow removal machines.

Bike Maps: Maps are being distributed at VDOT Distribution Centers, Fairfax County Libraries, City Recreation Centers.  Let Kirk know about any other desired locations.
