     and industrial D waste that OSW regulates.  This information can be
     found in the RCRA Data Summary.

     Questions and answers about municipal solid waste, hazardous waste,
     and industrial D waste that OSW regulates.  This information can be

     Answers

1.  a.  In 1990 Americans generated 4.5 pounds of municipal solid waste per
     person each day.  This was 1.8 pounds more that in 1960, the first
     year with national data.

      b.   Since 1960, the US generated the largest amount in 1997,
     increasing to 217 million tons of municipal solid waste.

2.   a.  Fifteen states recycled 30% or more.  By EPA region, the states
were:
     1 - ME, VT, MA      6 - none
     2 - NJ, NY               7 - AR
     3 - VA              8 - none
     4 - FL, GA, TN      9 - none
     5 - IA, MN, WI, SD            10 - WA

       b.  VA recycled 30% or more.  Followed by MD with 20 - 29%, WV with
     10 - 19%, and DC with ??.

3.    a.  NY had the most LQGs with 2,772.  CA followed with 1,782, OH with
     1,271, TX with 1,219, and IL with 1,058.

       b.  VA had the most LQGs with 329.  MD followed with 327, WV with
     119, and DC
      with 20.

4.    a.  TX generated the most with 18,973,000 tons of hazardous waste.
     LA followed with 4,624,000 tons, IL with 2,201,000 tons, OH with
     1,693,000 tons, and MS with 1,654,000 tons.

5.    Hazardous waste that contained only characteristic waste represented
53.6% of the
       21,809,000 tons generated.  The portion that contained both
characteristic and listed wastes             was 23.7% and the portion that
contained only listed wastes was 22.6%.

6.    a.  CA had the most TSDs with 250.  TX followed with 135, WI with
     132, MI with 113,  and  NC with 100.
       b.  VA had the most TSDs with 32.  MD followed with 25, WV with 22,
and DC with 1.
