Subject: BIKES ON METRO ALERT - ACT BEFORE MARCH 22

Contact Your METRO Board Member Re Expansion of Bike-on-Rail

After a year of off-and-on discussions with WABA, Metro staff have
agreed to announce a major expansion of the system's Bike-on-Rail program
when the Metro Board's Operations Committee meets March 22. At WABA's
urging, Metro staff are recommending three additional steps to make the
Metro-cycling connection stronger.

First, the midday hours of access for passengers with bikes would be
extended two hours (10:00 to 4:00, rather than 10:00 to 2:00). Second, for
the first time ever, cyclists would be able to board trains with their bikes
in the early morning, before 7:00 AM, on weekdays, making it possible for
commuters (at least the early risers) to commute both ways with their bike
on board. Finally, in a major change, cyclists would be able to board any
uncrowded car of a train, not just the last one. This latter step means
that instead of 4 bikes per train on weekends, 16-24 bikes could be carried
on Metro trains on weekends (depending on the length of the train). On
weekdays, when only 2 bikes are permitted per car, most trains could carry
up to 12 bikes.

Metro staff will present the changes to the Metro Board's Operations
Committee on March 22. To help ensure a positive reception, please contact
your Metro Board members before then and tell them you support these
changes.
