I received this note from a biker at work --

Metro area law enforcement authorities all tend to use one vedor, Colonial
Auction Services, to sell bikes at auction that have been abandoned, or
that are recovered (but unclaimed) stolen property. Although dealers
sometimes attend these events to scoop up good bikes for resale at a
profit, there still is ample opportunity for folks to get some really good
values on bikes. I've seen $ 800 aluminum Cannondales go for $ 40. The
auctioneer offers a clean bill of sale, too, so anyone claiming later on
that you have their 'stolen bike' would find the argument moot because you
can claim legal ownership (as long as you keep the sale paperwork, that
is).
The next auction for disposition of bikes will occur Friday, March 2nd, at
130 Fairground Road in Prince Frederick, Maryland, 20678. Potential buyers
can arrive early to look over the bikes and pick items to bid on... If you
have a family, it's also a great opportunity to get 'new' or 'replacement'
kids' bikes for your youngsters... Be sure when you 'kick the tires' to
check chains, bearings, and wheel rims (for trueness), etc. so you don't
get stuck with some maintenance costs post-purchase.
Purchase terms are "cash", or you may use a VISA or MASTERCARD.
For further information and directions to the auction site, you can call
Colonial Auction Services at (301) 627-7575.
