MAY 1 VIRGINIA GOVERNOR’S PROCLAMATION RIDE
Tuesday May 1, 2001 Richmond to Your Hometown
We're gearing up for a new event to promote biking as transportation and
recreation in Virginia. On Tuesday May 1 cyclists from around the state will
assemble at the State Capitol in Richmond to receive the Governor's "May is
Bike Month" Proclamation from Assistant Secretary of Transportation Dan
Shoemaker. Cyclists will then carry it by bike (or by bike and car) to local
elected officials. This is one way, one day out of the year, we can show
state organizations, the press, and ourselves that we're serious about
establishing priorities for alternative forms of transportation. The event
is being sponsored by BikeWalk Virginia, Virginia Lung Association, Virginia
Bicycling Federation, Virginia Trails Association, Virginia Department of
Transportation, Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Education, and
Virginia Department of Health.
For the past two years the Williamsburg Area Cyclists have received the
Proclamation from VDOT officials and biked 50 miles back to Williamsburg to
deliver it to the Mayor. This event supported the Capital-to-Capital Bikeway
currently under study. This year we want to enlarge it to cover the entire
state, and support biking causes and project throughout Virginia.
We need your help. Join in the celebration of May is Bike month. Bring your
friends. Make an appointment with your Mayor to deliver the Proclamation by
bike. Tell your local press to be there. Up-to-date information will be on
www.bikewalkvirginia.org. For cyclists in the Washington area who are
interested in participating, contact Bruce Dwyer, 703-549-3263,
