Dear BSCers
I attended the Nov 9 U.S. Route 1 Interchange Design Public Hearing
I know many of you are actively involved in trail designs accommodation
related to this Project. As a WABA and IISA member, I've also attended many
of the Public Hearing related to WW Bridge & Interchange Upgrades. At a few
of these meetings a small citizens group from an area south of the beltway
and west of US1 voiced their need to have Pedestrian Access to the
Eisenhower Corridor. These people currently walk the Pedestrian hostile US1
Bridge. They are the reason there is a sight wear path on the small patch
of grass between the Lee Center fence and Patrick Street. VDOT assured
them they would be accommodated.
The VDOT proposed Bike/Peds access for US1, routes Bike/Peds along the
southeast portion of the new interchange then to the east to the adjacent
interchange for Washington Street. While not as much a problem for
bicyclists, this is a bit out of the way for folks on foot heading to jobs
in the Eisenhower Corridor. There should be access on the west side of the
US1 interchange. (Similar to that proposed for the Telegraph Interchange.)
I notice that on the Alexandria Recreational Facilities and Trails Map,
there is a proposed Trail along Cameron Run, south of the existing Beltway.

It would be prudent if the widen beltway overpass that will cross Hooffs Run
had trail accommodations that.
1. Cross Hooffs Run (parallel to Cameron Run)
2. Run underneath the overpass to allow north/south access. (parallel
to Hooffs Run connecting to the trail on the north side of the beltway
If the structure of the proposed US1 interchange contained west side
accommodation for access to this future Off Street Bike Trail along Cameron
Run it (along with that mentioned above) would provide an excellent Bike/Ped
Connector to the Eisenhower Corridor.
I apologize for possibly repeating previously considered ideas. I think it
's important that Alexandria Bicycle Study Committee vet this Proposal. I'
m sending a copy to the following, to get it on the record within the 10-day
period.
