Thank you for speaking up in defense of the bridge. You may have seen some
press on it. I talked with the president of the Strawberry Hills Citizens
Association, and she is very supportive of multi-use trails. In fact, she
spoke in support of the Eisenhower Valley project and wrote a letter of
support. The local opposition is based on them not being involved in the
process earlier i.e. the city getting buy in from those most directly
impacted. Plus it appears that they are losing a good chunk of green space,
which may not be as bad as it looks once the landscaping is done and the
land where the old trail was is turned into grass. I explained that the new
standard call for wide bridges for the safety of multiple users. Whether
the bridge is ugly or not is a matter of person taste. I said that I could
understand their concerns. I think that they are going to ask that the
bridge be moved, somewhat. I am pretty sure it will stay as is. We agreed
that our respective groups should not argue with one another, not should we
get sucked into taking sides. We do not really care where the bridge is
located so long as there is one. Our speaking up did provide some balance
to the argument and made the case that the bridge is important.
