Wilson Bridge Project

Attached are three Wilson Bridge Stakeholder panel recommendations relating
to bicycle and pedestrian accommodation at the U.S. Rt. 1 and Telegraph Rd.
interchanges. You can also access the information under "Get Involved,
Stakeholder Participation Panels" heading at the bridge project web site
www.wilsonbridge.com The Alexandria Bicycle Committee had representatives
on the panels and worked hard to get bicycle and pedestrian accommodation
where none were planned before. The recommendations concerning the
crossings of the beltway were accepted and are currently in the plans. The
recommendation for a Steam Valley trail along the Fairfax County south bank
of Cameron Run was referred to Fairfax County and to Alexandria for
consideration. This trail is not a priority for the City of Alexandria since
it is focussing on bicycle and pedestrian accommodation within the city
limits in the Eisenhower Valley to the north. I do not believe that Fairfax
County is considering this project in its plans.
We would like to see the Stream Valley project brought back within the
scope of the Wilson Bridge project. It is appropriate because this trail
would provide relief from the impact the bridge and interchange
improvements will have on the Fairfax County neighborhoods between Telegraph
Rd. and U.S. Route 1. It is also appropriate as a significant alternative
transportation enhancement and recreation resource.
The Wilson Bridge Project held two public hearings on the changes made to
the project plan since 1997. The comment period is open until February 25.
Please send you comments to support the bicycle and pedestrian
accommodations that are in the design (we don't want them falling out later)
and asking for the Stream Valley project to be put back in. You may e-mail
comments to hearing at wwbgec.com or mail comments to Woodrow Wilson Bridge

Thanks you
