This is in the Virginia Weekly Section of the Washington Post.  This is one
part of a
letter I wrote.  The other part I hope will appear in a future column on the
longest red light in the area, which for a bicyclist can be indefinite if
the light is
on an activation device.  I am going to meeting with the city traffic people
today on my bike so they can set the trigger.  Hooray! and thanks to Dave
Levy for bird-dogging this.

Here are more of your thoughtful New Year's transportation resolutions for
local officials:

Dear Dr. Gridlock:
Resolved, that traffic engineers in local jurisdictions will modify the
settings on all traffic light loop activation devices so that they will
change a light from red to green when a bicycle passes over them.
These lights that will not change for a bicyclist are dangerous and should
not exist.
